PMS Week 9 / June 3, 2001 Highlights

Pikesville Middle School Field #1
Attman's Deli vs Havana Club Cannons
Game 1
Havana Club Cannons-5  Attman's Deli-3
WP - Mark Yokel  LP - Bruce Eisenberg
A tight battle was waged for the first five innings as Attman's led 3-2. In the t-6th a solo run by the Cannons tied the game. Very few opportunities arose for either team until the Cannons scored two in the t-9th and Attman's went quietly to take their sixth loss of the season and third at the hands of The Cannons. Mark Yokel out-dueled Bruce Eisenberg for a complete game win. Yokel walked no one and did receive excellent defensive support from Dan Kassel at shortstop and Rob Isennock behind the plate. Cannons were sparked by Jeff Robbins and Johnny Edelman 3-4 performances. Jim Peterson and Ernie Stephenson each contributed 2 hits, as did Evan Kreitzer with a double and triple.

Game 2
Attman's Deli-5  Havana Club Cannons-1
WP - Bruce Eisenberg  LP - Tom Paulshock
Bruce Eisenberg pitched another gem and was supported with 2 early runs and 3 more in the t-6th on a double by Scott Moffet and singles by Ricky Farley, Harry Schevker and Robbie Ressin. Lee Eidelberg did the damage in the 1st inning with a triple to drive home Scott Moffet, and then scored on a single by Warren Scudder. Tom Paulshock received little support from the Cannons offense as the Cannons only had four hits against Attman's Bruce Eisenberg, who won his tenth game of the season.

Notes: Tom Paulshock did return for this week's doubleheader, but there was a miscommunication between our league and the area Umpire Supervisor. Paulshock will be required to sit a 3rd week for his suspension (the next Cannons regular season game) following an argument with a substitute umpire on May 6. Paulshock was suspended for 3 weeks, but BYE weeks or postponement weeks can not count towards that total. The league managers have voted to 'grandfather' Paulshock into our league, but will force all other pitchers in the league to conform to the published league pitching rules (i.e. no 'sling-shot' pitching).

Pikesville Middle School Field #3
Legal Papers Inc. vs Palmgard
Game 1
Legal Papers-6   Palmgard-3
WP- Marty Ellis   LP-Larry Hineline
LPI started off strong in the t-1st inning with a Scott Bloom single followed by a homerun blast from Donnie Herrod scoring 2 runs. Palmgard tied score with 2 runs in b-1st. In t-2nd LPI hit 4 consecutive singles by Bob Hansen, Mark Cusina, Marc Summerfield and Marty Ellis loading the bases with 2 out. In a clutch situation, with an 0-2 count 2 outs, David Kopel hit a line drive shot in between right center and right fielder for a 3-run triple, giving Palmgard a 6-2 lead. Palmgard managed 1 run in b-2nd. From the 3rd inning on, Palmgard shut down the LPI hitters with basically 1-2-3 innings as Paul Shifrin hit a single in the 3rd, Jeff Sacks single in the 6th and a triple from Jeff Wolff in the 7th inning, but no runs were added, ending the game score at 6-3. Overall defense was spectacular for the entire team.

Key Hitters for Palmgard were Jeff Webster (2-3, HR, RBI, R); Jim Davis (1-3, HR, RBI, R); Mike Woods (3-3, R).

Game 2
Palmgard-16  Legal Papers-1
WP- Mike Johnson   LP-Ted Winner
Legal Papers started game 2 with all healthy players this time, but it wasn't enough as in the first 4 innings, Palmgard had bases load each inning scoring 12 runs by the t-4th inning. This game was lost offensively for LPI from the 1st inning as Scott Bloom hit a shot to CF where Palmgard outfielder made a diving catch for the first out, then 2 consecutive strikeouts on David Kopel and Donnie Herrod. This set the tone for the rest of the game as LPI only had 4 hits for the ENTIRE GAME. The only highlight for LPI was a right field home run shot by Donnie Herrod over the right field fence. Mike Johnson came on in relief of Larry Hineline in the b-3rd inning and came away with the win while scattering 1 run.  Palmgard's 3-4-5 hitters drove in12 of the 16 runs.

Game 2 key hitters for Palmgard were Jim Davis (2-3, 2B, HR, 2-R, 5RBI); Mark Benjamin (3-4, 2B, 3B, 3-R, 3RBI); Jim Silvestri (2-3, 2B, HR, 3-R, SF, 4RBI).

Pikesville Middle School Field #4
Kings vs GorgeousWatches.com
Game 1
Kings-5  GorgeousWatches.com-4 (8 Innings)
WP- Mike Herr   LP- Sonny Cherlstein
Mike Herr battled with Sonny Cherlstein in a pitcher's duel, with the Kings coming from behind twice in their final at-bats to take the opener 5-4 in 8 innings. Scoreless thru the first 3 innings, GorgeousWatches got on top 1-0 with an unearned run in t-4th. Rick Schreiber led off the inning with a triple that split the gap in CF. Herr was able to retire Larry Henderson on an infield popup for the 1st out. Tony Luna then popped-out to 1B Jeff Goldstein in foul territory. Schreiber was caught in a rundown between 3B and home plate, but scored on a botched throw. GW added single runs in the t-5th and t-6th on SF's by Russ Seamster and Rick Schreiber. Trailing 3-0 entering the b-7th, Jeff Slutzker reached to open the inning on an infield error.  Singles by Alan Varhaftik, Mike Herr (RBI), Shilo Merwitz (RBI), Dave Roogow, and Dave Miller (RBI) tied the score at 3-3. With still 1 out and the bases loaded, Rick Amernick lofted a flyball to medium LCF. GW LCF Rick Schreiber made the catch and tossed out Merwitz attempting to score the winning run. The game moved to the t-8th where Andrew Rosenstein drew a leadoff walk, the only walk of the game for either team. Following a single by Seamster, Jon Koman hit a SF to LCF to give GW the go ahead run. With 1 out in the Kings b-8th, Marc Goldstein singled to CF. Jeff Slutzker clobbered a pitch into the trees in CF. Goldstein initially missed second base so he retreated back to touch the base before proceeding to 3B. Slutzker, who should have had an easy triple, had to hold up at 2B on Goldstein's apparent blunder, but the relay throw towards 3B went over Jon Koman's head, out-of-play, allowing Goldstein to score with the tie run and Slutzker with the winning run. GW played errorless ball thru the first 6 innings, but errors in the 7th and 8th innings cost them the game.

Notes: Kings SS Jan Katzen left the game in the t-3rd when he stopped a Jon Koman bullet with his bare hand, throwing out Koman before leaving the field to ice down his hand. He did re-enter the game as a hitter in b-7th and at 1B for the t-8th. Kings SS Mike Pusateri has missed the last 3 weeks with a hand injury, but is expected to return to the club next week. GW Larry Henderson was 0-3 against Herr in game 1 and has not had a base hit against him since May 24, 1992. On that date, Henderson was a 5 year veteran, sporting a NY Mets batting helmet, and playing LF for GW/Ikon/Money Mailer/Hyatt. He led off game 1 on field #2 with a 3B, but was 0-6 the rest of that day against Herr. Andrew Rosenstein was the starting SS and is the only other surviving GW member from that squad. Current Kings players from that date include Alan Varhaftik, Kenny Salzman, and Marc Goldstein.

Game 2
GorgeousWatches.com-16  Kings- 7
WP-  Rich Northrup    LP- Jeff Goldstein
The bats came alive in game 2, with GorgeousWatches coming away with a 16-7 win. Kings grabbed lead 2-0 in t-1st on an RBI single by Alan Varhaftik and a bases loaded walk by Shilo Merwitz. In b-1st, singles by Rick Schreiber and Tony Luna were followed by a Russ Dlin 2-RBI triple. Bobby Morrow followed Dlin with a SF to put GW ahead 3-2. Schreiber hit a grandslam HR in the b-2nd to give GW starter Rich Northrup a cushion to work with. Trailing 7-2 after 4 innings, Kings rallied in t-5th. Singles by Jeff Goldstein and Jeff Slutzker were followed by a Varhaftik 3-run HR, putting the Kings back into the game. Jan Katzen and Mike Herr followed with singles, with Katzen scoring on a misplay by the GW rightfielder. Shilo Merwitz' single scored Herr to tie the score 7-7. GW put the game out of reach with a 7 runs b-5th and 2 more in b-6th. The key hits in 5th were an RBI single by Larry Henderson, and RBI doubles by Russ Dlin and Bobby Morrow(2 RBI). Rich Northrup picked up his first win of the season, but many of his fastballs were questioned by the Kings as being illegal because the ball was coming outside the wrist.

Pikesville Senior High Field #5
Sky & Sky Inc  vs  Orbin Publishing
Game 1
Sky & Sky Inc-18  Orbin Publishing-3 (4 Innings)
WP- Larry Newman  LP- Gary Schoengold
Both teams were missing the key component of an umpire, so they supplied their own. Thanks to everybody who helped out with umpiring duties. Orbin Publishing scored 3 in the b-2nd to gain the lead by one, but their offense fell silent from then on. Sky exploded for 7 runs in the t-3rd, aided by an error in the Orbin outfield that opened the flood gates. In the t-4th, 9 runs crossed with 2 down. The damage was inflicted by Scott Felton with a 2-run dinger followed later by Joel Wax with a 3-run job. The game ended after 4 innings with a final score of 18-3 as Larry Newman got the win and Gary Schoengold took the loss. A number of Sky & Sky batters contributed to the offense.

Game 2
Sky & Sky Inc-14  Orbin Publishing- 13
WP- Larry Newman  LP- Gary Schoengold
Game #2 was a much closer contest with one run in the b-7th being the difference. Several ties and lead changes made for a seesaw contest. Four quick scores in the t-1st allowed Orbin Publishing to take the early lead. Sky & Sky managed just one answer run in the b-1st. Orbin added to their lead with 2 runs in the t-3rd. Orbin wasn't done as they padded their lead by 4 more in the t-4th including a Greg Teague 3-run HR. Unwilling to go quietly the offense returned to form for Sky & Sky as 11 runs crossed the plate in the b-4th. A 3-run home run by Eric Gertner, and a 2-run double by David Kowitz were the big blows in that inning, as Sky & Sky banged out 12 hits including 3 home runs. Orbin publishing cut the lead in half as one run crossed in the t-5th making the score 12-11. Orbin Publishing clawed their way back into the lead with 2 more in the t-6th, only to have David Kowitz tie the score at 13 with a solo job. After a 1-2-3 inning from Orbin's offense, Sky & Sky got the game winner as Eric Gertner singled home Brian "Sky" Mekiliesky for the 14-13 victory. Larry Newman again got the win and Gary Schoengold took the hard luck loss. Both Brain Sky and Andy Bloom went 6-7 on the day, Alan Smith had a 4-5 day, and Eric Gertner contributed 6 RBI in the doubleheader. Fortunately for Sky & Sky they were able to pull out the victories despite sorely missing their fearless leader...who was catching rays on the beach.
