PMS Week 3 / April 22, 2001 Highlights

Pikesville Middle School Field #2
Legal Papers Inc vs GorgeousWatches.com
Game 1
Legal Papers - 13  GorgeousWatches.com - 9
WP - Ted Winner  LP - Sonny Cherlstein

The Legal Papers Inc version-Legal Papers jumped out to an early lead by scoring 5 runs in the top of the first.  A double by Dave Kopel scored Marc Cucina, Jeff Sacks singled home Kopel. Eric Ruby doubled setting up Mark Summerfield for a 3 run blast. GorgeousWatches answered with 2 in the bottom of the inning.  Legal Papers kept hitting, scoring 8 runs in the next 3 innings. GorgeousWatches rallied with 7 runs of their own, but not enough to overtake Legal Papers.

The more cynical GorgeousWatches.com version- A new name, but the same results as last year as GorgeousWatches.com committed seven errors in the first three innings to stake Legal Papers to an early lead. On their way to an 11-9 victory. Legal Papers scored five in the first inning with the help of a John Koman error at 3B and a misplayed ball in RFby Rich Northrup. Things only got worse as more errors and misplayed fly balls staked Legal Papers to an early 10-2 lead. Finally, GorgeousWatches.com got the bats going in the b-3rd. Pitcher Sonny Cherlstein led off with walk. 2B Andrew Rosenstein walked. C Larry Henderson walked. LCF Russ Dlin hit a sacrifice fly to make it 10-3. Bobby Morrow drove in Rosenstein and Henderson with a double. Rob Richter then doubled in Morrow to make it 10-5. Russ Martin then hit a towering 2-run homer to RCF to make it 10-7. Steve Lang capped the scoring with an RBI single making the score 10-8. Gorgeouswatches.com never got any closer despite Pitcher Ted Winner's wildness. More errors in the field, kept giving extra outs to keep Legal Papers comfortably ahead. Sonny got the loss to make his record 0-2.

Game 2
Legal Papers - 11  GorgeousWatches.com - 9
WP - Marty Ellis  LP - Jeff Harris

Legal Papers Inc version- Legal Papers started off game 2 slow, giving up 1 run in the bottom of the first.  In the second inning the bats woke up.  Three singles, a walk and a fielders choice yielded 4 runs.  Both Legal Papers and GorgeousWatches scored 3 runs a piece in the next inning.   With Legal Papers leading 7 - 6 in the top of the 5th, GorgeousWatches scored 3 runs taking a 9 - 7 lead.  In the bottom of the 6th, LP bats woke up again, scoring 4 runs to take the lead and win 11 - 9 .

GorgeousWatches.com version- The second game found GorgeousWatches.com take an early 1-0 lead when Dlin drove in Henderson, who had tripled with one out. But alas, wearing gold gloves in the field really doesn't help. Newcomer pitcher Jeff Harris pitched well enough to win, but timely hitting by Legal Papers and untimely defensive lapses combined to keep Harris winless as well. The seesaw battle had Legal Papers  ahead 7-6 after three full innings. In the t-5th inning, GorgeousWatches.com took what seemed to be the lead for good when they strung together back to back triples, a walk, single, sacrifice fly and single to score three runs to take a 9-7 lead. But in the b-6th, GorgeousWatches.com pitcher Harris walked the first two hitters, and Legal Papers took full advantage by scoring four runs to take the lead 11-9. GorgeousWatches.com went down meekly in the t-7th to fall to 1-5.

Pikesville Middle School Field #3

Kings  vs  Sky & Sky Inc
Game 1
Kings- 14  Sky & Sky Inc.- 8
WP- Chuck Grant(2-1)  LP-Marc Leibovitz(1-2)
Chuck Grant of the Kings put on a great pitching performance to nearly shutdown what had been a potent Sky & Sky offense.  Kenny Salzman was the first of 4 singles as the Kings knocked in 4 runs.  The big blow was a Alan Varhaftik single which brought in 2.  Shilo Merwitz upped the ante with a 2 run blast to left center field as the Kings pushed 5 across in the b-1st. Hoping to start a comeback, Joel Wax knocked Scott Felton in after he had doubled, but the Kings got that run right back taking advantage of 2 errors by the right side of the infield.  In the 4th Sky & Sky bats finally came to life.  Four hits including a 2 run single by Andy Bloom pushed 3 across, but the big blow was Alan Smith going yard for a 3-run job.  Not to be outdone the Kings got things started right away in the b-4th with a Merwitz double followed by a Dave Miller single to plate one.  Kenny Salzman knocked in a pair to push the Kings back up by 1 after 4.  Jumping to the 6th, the Kings  added 5 insurance runs.  Shilo Merwitz started things off with a double and Jan Katzen singled him home.  Four more hits including a 2-run single by Mike Herr helped put things out of reach as Sky & Sky went quietly in their half of the 7th.  Final score...14-8 in favor of the Kings.  Chuck Grant earned the win and Mark Leibovitz took the loss.  Hitting stars for the Kings were Shilo Merwitz who went 3 for 3 (HR, 2 2B, 3 runs) and  Marc Goldstein went 3 for 3 (2B, 2 runs).  Kings 2B  Dave Miller went 2 for 3 (2 R, 1 RBI) and made 2 outstanding defensive plays. For Sky & Sky Scott Felton went 2 for 2 (2 2B, BB) and  Alan Smith 2 for 3(1 R,3 RBI,HR).

Game 2
Sky & Sky Inc- 15  Kings- 5
WP-Larry Newman  LP-Jeff Goldstein
Onto game 2 where the Kings' bats picked up right where they left off. Chuck Grant clobbered a homerun onto field #2 for a 3-run homer and an error coupled with some walks lead to a SF, as 4 runs crossed in the t-1st.  Sky & Sky seemed to take out their frustration on the new Kings pitcher by batting around in the first.  Brian Kowitz tripled to push across 2, and 5 more hits lead to 4 more runs making the score 6-4 after 1.  Scott Felton got things going again in the b-3rd with a double.  Andy Bloom singled him in and came around to score as 3 more runs were added in the b-3rd.  In the 4th Brian Kowitz got things rolling with a single and David Kowitz knocked in 2.  Andy doubled him home, Kirk Gorman doubled home Bloom, and  Eric Gertner seemed to take his cue from those guys as a total of 5 runs crossed the plate.  In the meantime Larry Newman seemed to be in cruise control facing 4 batters or less in the 2nd through 6th innings.  In the b-5th Mike Rottenberg returned to his old form rocketing  a single down the 3rd base line, but Sky & Sky failed to take advantage of the opportunity to put the game out of reach. Chuck Grant came in from the bullpen to try again to work some magic on the Sky & Sky lineup. Finally in the t-7th the Kings put a small chink in the armor of the Sky & Sky defense.  As he had done all day, Shilo Merwitz got things going with a double and eventually came around to score, but it was simply not enough as the game ended 15-5.  Larry Newman earned the victory and Jeff Goldstein took the loss.  Hitting stars for Sky & Sky were Brian Kowitz 2 for 3 (3B, 1B,BB,  2RBI).  The 5th slot in the order was its most productive as Scott Felton doubled twice and scored twice and David Kowitz knocked in 2 with a single and a walk.  Each of them scoring on all of their at bats.  Andy Bloom was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI, Kirk Gorman had a double with 2 RBI, Eric Gertner went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI as did Alan Smith.
