Week 7 Highlights
PMS Field #2 Rue Rue's Raiders vs
Legal Papers.net
Game 1
Legal Papers won the opener 7-4 . Richard Berger pitched two complete games for
the first time since becoming a Raider. Rumor has it that "Dicker"
expects to be bedridden and on oxygen support for at least the next 48 hours. In
game 1 Ricky Farley blasted the ball over the right field fence at field # 2..
Game one marked this year's debut of catching phenom Carl "show 'em where
to pitch" Helfand. Carl, at age 55, becomes the oldest player to catch two
complete games in league history. The previous record was held by Attman's
Fred Shapiro. Between Richard Berger on the mound and Carl Helfand behind
the plate there was a combined age of 106 years. On the day, Helfand was 0-5.
Game 2
Rue Rue's Raiders took game two 4-2. Raiders 3B Jamie Buchanan was outstanding
defensively. With the pitching win, Richard Berger improved his record to 2-3,
while Legal Papers Marty Ellis had his record drop to 2-2.
PMS Field #4 Kings vs
Schaefer & Strohminger
Schaefer & Strohminger was only to get 7 players to the field by
the required starting time, thus resulting in a doubleheader forfeit to the
Kings, 7-0 by rule, in each game. The doubleheader loss drops S & S out of
1st place in the standings. The Kings, meanwhile, have 'played' just 1 week
since April 2 because of rainouts, a bye week, and the forfeit. Kings OF Jim
Silvestri drove 6 hours from North Carolina, leaving at 3 A.M,. to arrive at the
field right before the scheduled game time.
PMS Field #4 Attman's Deli vs Sky & Sky Incorporated
Game 1
Deciding to change fields at the last minute due to sloppy conditions, Sky &
Sky and Attman's Deli moseyed down to field #4 to take advantage of the clean-up
job undertaken by commissioner Mike Herr. Attman's struck for three early runs
in the t-1st using patented Attman's style. Four singles and a SF later, the bar
was set. Bryan Wolf doubled, and was singled home by Andy Rosenthal in the
t-2nd. Obviously Sky & Sky was taking notes, but left out the important
element of keeping their head in the game. Three consecutive singles plated 1
run, but a shot to LCF by Eric Gertner was caught--as was the napping runner who
thought that the ball had dropped in for a base hit. Sky added 1 more in the
b-3rd as Joel Wax tripled home Alan Smith after his single. The scored remained
4-2 in favor of Attman's until the t-5th when they again showed their experience
at taking advantage of the intangibles. Freddie Shapiro singled, was advanced to
second base, and then scored on a double tag via a long fly ball off of Scott
Moffet's bat. Pouncing on an opportune throwing error, Lee Eidelberg knocked in
the runner to give Attman's a usually comfortable 6-2 lead going into the last
inning. Down 4 runs, and having the first two batters retired rather easily,
Sky's chances were fading. Four consecutive singles by the bottom of the order,
a well-received "professional courtesy" walk to Sky pitcher Marc
Leibovitz, and leadoff batter Aric Spitulnik was in position to single home the
tying run. He did just that, but huge base running mistake cost S&S the tie.
The tying runner never touched third base on his way home. Since the game was
being worked by 2 umps, the blunder was observed (by both umps), appealed, and
ruled as the final out. Game over, 6-5 in favor of Attman's Deli. Bruce
Eisenberg got the win, and Marc Leibovitz was saddled with the hard luck loss.
Hitting stars for Attman's were Lee Eidelberg 1-2,SF,2rbi) Don Herrod(2-3,rbi)
Bryan Wolf(2-3,2B). Sky & Sky's attack featured Brian Kowitz(2-2), Brian
"Sky" Mekiliesky & Scott Felton each 2-3, and Alan Smith started
his banner day off(3-3).
Game 2
Game two saw more defensive minded play. Attman's used a key, two-out error to
score two unearned runs in the t-1st with Lee Eidelberg doubling to place
runners at second and third. David Kowitz tripled home a run in the b-1st to cut
the lead in half. Then the pitchers took over the game. Bruce Eisenberg
surrendered a scant three hits over the next three innings, but Sky & Sky's
Larry Newman topped that feat, going once through Attman's line-up without
surrendering a hit. The sixth inning inched the gate open for Attman's. Joe
Vassallo doubled and scored easily on Lee Eidelberg's screaming liner between
two Sky & Sky outfielders. Lee pulled up limp on his way around the bases,
needing to stop at third. Harry Schevker eventually singled him home, as
Attman's was out of reserve players. Attman's lead 4-1 entering the top of the
seventh, and remembering Sky's comeback in the morning game decided to add 3
more for insurance. Fred Shapiro's standard issue double down the RF line scored
one. Joe Vassallo singled Fred home, and not being one to miss an at-bat (in
spite of an injured leg) Lee Eidelberg capped the scoring with a single. Sky
& Sky mustered two runners in their half of the seventh, but saw their
record drop to a less than stellar 2-6. Bruce Eisenberg induced 13 pop-ups to
get his second win of the day, and Larry Newman took the loss. Hitting stars for
Attman's included Lee Eidelberg (3-4),needing the long ball to complete the
cycle, and had 2rbi. Fred Shapiro(1-2,2B,BB,rbi) also helped Attman's cause. Sky
& Sky's Alan Smith completed his perfect hitting day, adding three more
singles. Eric Gertner(2-3) added two of his own.
PSH Field #5 Havana Club
Cannons vs. Palmgard
Game 1
The Havana Club Cannons and Palmgard were tied at 8-8 as the Cannons came to bat
in the b-5th inning in game 1. The Cannons exploded for 5 in the 5th and 5 more
in the b-6th to win 18-9. The Cannons were the recipient of six walks off
Palmgard pitching and added 18 hits for the game. Mike Ginsberg and Johnny
Edelman each doubled and homered, while Jim Peterson had a pair of triples. Jeff
Robbins also tripled while going 3-3 with a walk. Tom Paulshock pitched six
innings for the win as Andy Winick mopped up. Mike Johnson(3-1) took his first
loss of the season. Key hitters for Palmgard in the game 1 loss were Rob Bark
(2-4, 2R), Jim Davis (2-4, 2B, RBI), Mike Woods (3-4, 2R, 2RBI), Eric Humes
(2-4, R, RBI), and Dave Schwartz (2-4, 2B, RBI).
Game 2
In game two Evan Kreitzer hit a 1st inning 2-run homer and Palmgard bounced back
with 2
of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Cannons managed to push a run
across in the t-3rd with a
Johnny Edelman two out single and the score was 3-2 into the t-6th. Dan Kassel,
Jeff Kurland, Johnny Edelman, Evan Kreitzer, and Gerry Edelman all had hits and
the Cannons opened up a 7-2 lead. The
Palmgard club brought it back to 7-5 and then a Dan Kassel two out double
settled the final score at 8-5 Havana Club. Once again the winning pitcher was
Tom Paulshock, and this time in a complete game. The Cannons had 33 hits on the
day and outstanding defensive play by Palmgard center fielder Rob Bark kept that
total from going higher. In game 2 Bark offensively was 2-3 with a 2B,3B, and 2
RBI. Palmgard's Gary Weinapple took the loss, dropping his season record to 0-4
