Week 6 Highlights

PMS Field #2    Schaefer & Strohminger  vs Sky & Sky Inc.
Game 1
On Field #2, Schaffer & Strohminger attempted to maintain it shared lead atop the league, but Sky & Sky knew that it had a golden opportunity to jump ahead of their opponent's in the standings. It became a seesaw contest throughout, with a walk-off ending. Sky's leadoff batter promptly reached first on an infield dribbler and proceeded to score on Brian Kowitz's SF. Schaefer's Tony Luna attempted to knot the score in the b-1st, but was beaten by the relay throw to home, and tagged out after his triple. In the b-2nd, Schaefer's Andrew Rosenstein singled home the clean-up hitter to tie things at 1 after 2 innings. Jumping ahead to the 4th, Brian Kowitz led off with a double and came around to score on Alan Smith's groundout. Again Rosenstein came to Schaefer's rescue to triple home two runners placing them ahead by 1 after 4 innings. Eric Gertner tripled in Sky's t-5th and scored on newcomer, Scott Felton's deep shot to RCF. The ball was bobbled in the outfield and Felton took advantage of the miscue to score on the play. Schaefer's Mark Yokel helped his own cause with a bases loaded SF in the b-5th. Tony Luna came around to score after reaching second on an infield error. This time it was the other half of the Rosenstein contingency as Mark singled him home to give Schaefer & Strohminger the lead again in the 6th. Alan Smith started the damage in the t-7th for Sky & Sky with a leadoff triple and came in to score off the bat of Wayne Resnick. The 5-5 tie was promptly ended with a solo shot over the RF fence by Schaefer's leadoff batter to seal the win for Schaefer and Strohminger. Their hitting stars featured Tony Luna(2-2, SF), Andrew Rosenstein(2-3, 1B,3B,3rbi) and Bill ???(2-3, 1B,HR,2rbi) including the game ender. Sky & Sky's Aric Spitulnik went (2-2,BB) in the loss. Winning pitcher Mark Yokel, losing pitcher Marc Lebovitz.

Game 2
Both teams seemed to leave the stellar defense in the first game as the bats were in full display for the second contest. Schaefer's bats got hot out of the gate as they pushed three runs across with three hits and a costly error. A brilliant gem of coaching strategy employed by Larry Henderson, allowed his team to escape unscathed in the b-1st. Intentionally walking Brian Kowitz with a runner on third allowed Schaefer to induce a groundout, ending the threat. In Sky's second inning, the bottom half of the order took it upon themselves to tie the game at 3. Three straight extra base knocks by Brian "Sky" Mekiliesky, Eric Gertner, and Wayne Resnick led to two runs and Aric Spitulnik singled in the tying run. Score after 2 innings was 3-3. Sky & Sky took the lead in b-3rd off of a Brian Kowitz home run over the LCF's head. Schaefer & Strohminger answered with a flurry of their own. They pushed across 5 runs in the t-4th. A walk, 2 errors and three singles led to the damage, and a 3 run lead for Schaefer. Sky & Sky immediately returned the favor. A Mike Novak double got things going. Then David Kowitz and Scott Felton followed suit. Larry Henderson again showed his keen managerial prowess, electing to walk Brian Kowitz, and the gutsy call paid dividends. After 4 innings, Schaefer led 8-7. Then the bats really got going for Schaefer & Strohminger as they batted around in the t-6th. The big blows were delivered by the brothers' Rosenstein. Andrew tripled home 2 runs and Mark one upped him with a HR to RCF. Each of the two shots produced 2 RBI's as Schaefer jumped out to a 7 run lead. Henderson and Tony Luna singled home runners in the inning as well. The pitching change made mid-inning was treated with disdain as Schaefer seemingly shut the door on Sky & Sky. Four insurance runs were added for a cushion, with some familiar names doing the labor. Pitcher Mark Yokel singled home a run, and Larry Henderson doubled home one as well. Tony Luna and Andrew Rosenstein each duplicated the feat. As it turned out, their last inning insurance was a badly needed set of runs. Fresh from the losing side of a last inning comeback, and with sloppy defense from the opposition, the bottom half of Sky's 7th started to show promise. Brian Kowitz reached on an error, and Alan Smith moved him over. Howe Rudow, batting for the injured Eric Gertner, got an RBI single, and Wayne Resnick reached on an error. Joel Wax hit a SF then Mike Novak singled home a run. Alan Friedman tapped a liner into shallow LF to keep the rally going. Down to their last out, the top of Sky's line-up was ready to keep things going. An Aric Spitulnik RBI single preceded a David Kowitz RBI single. Scott Felton drew a walk, and was now facing Brian Kowitz with the bases loaded. A long high drive towards the RF fence was put away by the RF to end the threat. Final score 18-13. Mark Yokel got his second win of the day and Larry Newman took the loss.

The most prominent, of numerous hitting stars for Schaefer & Strohminger, were pitcher Mark Yokel(4-5), Larry Henderson (3-5, 4RBI), Andrew Rosenstein(1-2, BB, 2SF, 4RBI) & Mark Rosenstein(3-5) who lacked a triple for the cycle. Sky & Sky big hitters were Aric Spitulnik(4-5), David Kowitz(3-5,2B), Scott Felton(2-4, 2RBI, BB) & Wayne Resnick(3-4, 2B)

Ritchie Path drew a 1 out walk for the Raiders in the 2nd inning and Joey Jones and Ricky Farley drew walks in the 4th inning. With 2 outs and 2 on in the t-4th, Toupe Lala hit a scorching line-drive that was snared by Kings firstbaseman Duane Reiswig. Kings scratched out both of their runs against newcomer Larry Heinline. Jeff Goldstein(7 IP,12 H,6 R,5 ER1 W,0 K), filling in for the vacationing Lane Gordon, was greeted to start the b-1st by a Kenny Wilond HR down the left field line.
