Legal Papers Inc vs Sky & Sky Inc
Game 1
Legal Papers 15 Sky & Sky Inc. 13
written by Dave Kopel
The entire game was a hitting barrage by both
teams with 13 hits each and LPI scoring 15-13 for the game winner. In
the 2nd inning, Ruby started the rally with a single to left, Hansen singled, followed
by a double from Shifrin and Proper ending the score at 4-0. In the
3rd inning, Kopel started the rally with an E-6 hit followed by a double from
Sacks, and Ruby and singles from Hansen and Silber ending the scoring to 8-5.
In the 4th inning, SKY & SKY continued with its troubles at short stop
with fielding. On the day he had 6 errors on routine ground
balls. LPI scored 4 more runs to end the scoring to: 12-6.
Sky & Sky wouldn't go out quietly, as they scored 1 run in the 5th inning
and 5 more in the 7th inning. But LPI has scored 3 more insurance runs
in the 7th inning for a game closer of: 15-12. Kevin pitched a superb game for the win while Lebo took took the loss. If Lebo's defense would
have completed most of the routine plays the outcome would have been changed!

One half game separated Legal Papers Inc. and
Sky & Sky as they battled for possession of fourth place coming into
today. An error allowed LPI's first batter to reach, and
foreshadowed many more to come by Sky & Sky's defense. Unfortunately
for LPI's case they could not take advantage of the generosity, and left
Johnny Feldman stranded at third. As Sky & Sky batted in the b-1st,
they returned the favor. Aric Spitulnik started off with a single and
came around to score on Brian Mekiliesky's RBI double. Andy Bloom
followed suit with an RBI double of his own and alertly headed to third on the
outfielder's bobble. Sky & Sky could not capitalize on the
opportunity, but did lead 2-0 after one inning. That's when the poor
fielding started to shape the outcome of the game. Two errors by the
right side of the infield allowed Bob Hansen and Paul Shiffrin to tie the game
with RBI hits. Larry proper came up and promptly doubled to push LPI
ahead by 2. The third inning defense for Sky & Sky went from bad to
worse. This time three errors by the SS allowed four more runs to cross
the plate. Jeff Sacks and Eric Ruby each doubled home a run, and Gabe
Silber added an RBI hit to push Legal Papers Inc. ahead by 6. Realizing
that the defense was letting Sky & Sky down, the offense decided to assist
in the effort. Two walks to start the inning allowed Brian Kowitz to
push one across on a sac fly. Shortly thereafter, Andy Bloom doubled
home two more as Sky & Sky pulled back to within 2 after three innings.
Legal Papers Inc. went back to what was working and took advantage of
two more errors by the right side of the Sky & Sky infield. Bob
Hansen was the big bat in the inning, tripleing just inside the RF foul line
to drive in two of the four runs, as LPI was again perched upon a 6 run lead.
Chipping away at the lead, Aric Spitulnik started off with a walk and
eventually came around to score on a Brian "Sky" single.
Sensing that 5 runs may not be enough, LPI went to work in the T--7th...the
old-fashioned way. Jeff Sacks singled and then scored on an Eric Ruby
double. Gabe Silber added one more with an RBI double of his own, and
then Larry Proper got in on the action with his own RBI double. Those
three insurance runs proved pivotal as Sky & Sky came up to scratch its
way back in the game. Joel Wax led off with a single and pinch-hitter
Stuart Rudo heated things up as Sky now had first and second with one down.
Aric Spitulnik reached on an error and Scott Felton doubled him home to pull
Sky & Sky to within 6. Brian Kowitz got an RBI on his ground out,
and Brian "Sky" Mekiliesky homered to pull Sky within 3. But
the rally fell short and the game ended 15-12. Kevin Oliner got the win
and Marc Lebovitz took the loss despite giving up only five earned runs.
Hitting stars for LPI included Jeff Sacks (2-4, 2B,1B,RBI,3 runs), Eric
Ruby(2-3,2 2B,BB,2 RBI,2 runs), Bob Hansen(2-4,3B,1B,3RBI) Gabe
Silber(2-4,2B,1B 2RBI) and finally (Larry Proper 2-4,2 2B,4RBI). Sky
& Sky also had several contributors. Aric Spitulnik(1-2,1B,2 BB,4
runs) Brian Mekiliesky(3-4,HR,2B,1B,5RBI) and Andy Bloom(2-4,2 2B,2 RBI).
Game 2
Sky & Sky Inc 14 Legal Papers 7
written by Dave Kopel
LPI's veteran pitcher ELLIS was to accurate
in the second game that even his off the plate inside pitches were dropping
in for singles and doubles. SKY & Sky could do nothing wrong. In
the first inning the first 4 batters scored 4 runs with a Gertner home run to
make it 5-0. In the second 3 more runs were added by SKY &
Sky. The fourth Inning was the only rally LPI had whereby they
scored 6 runs including one in the
3rd inning. LPI had 10+ fly ball-outs for the game while in the 5th inning,
SKY & SKY added 6 more runs to shut down LPI. Losing pitcher was
Ellis and Newman got the win. Ending score was: 14-7.

Game 2 defense was slightly sharper for Sky
& Sky, but Legal Papers still took advantage of the poor fielding...would
it be enough? The bats were out in force for Sky & Sky in the top
of the first. Scott Felton doubled home one as did Brian Sky, but the
big blast was a three run shot by Eric Gertner as Sky jumped out to an early
5-0 lead. Joel Wax led off the second by socking a pitch towards field
#2 for a solo shot, and Brian Sky and Andy Bloom each singled home runs to
make the lead 8-0 after one and a half. Controversy erupted to end the
second, as an apparently safe Larry Proper argued his case too much for the
umpire's taste and was ejected. In the home half of the third LPI took
advantage of the 'professional courtesy' walk issued to Marty Ellis, as Johnny
Feldman eventually singled him home. The bottom of the fourth was a huge
inning for Legal Papers as they incorporated two errors into a six run inning.
The infamous leadoff walk allowed Gabe Silber to single one in, but the hit
was costly as he pulled a muscle rounding first. LPI continued to claw
their way back into the thick of things as his replacement, Howard Rosenberg,
came around to score on a Dave Kopel single. Marty Ellis helped his own
cause also singleing one run home. Sky's pitcher seemed to induce a
routine pop-up for the third out--but not on this day as the outfielder
mishandled it. Scott Bloom cashed in on the gift and doubled home two more.
Legal Papers Inc. pulled to within one momentarily, until Sky & Sky
answered the challenge in the top of the 5th. Brian Kowitz led off with
the first of three straight singles. Eric Gertner raised the stakes as
he doubled home one and Carl Goldsmith bettered his effort with a two RBI
double. Alan Smith then went yard with a two run job to push the lead
back to seven. Both teams seemed to putter out after their six run
innings, as only one hit was allowed by either pitcher in the last two and a
half innings. The final score was 14-7 as Larry Newman got his third win
in as many starts, and Marty Ellis absorbed the loss. Sky & Sky's
attack was aided by Aric Spitulnik and Brian Kowitz with two and three hits
respectively. Brian Sky went 3-4 with 2 RBI and Andy Bloom was 2-4, also
with 2 RBI. Eric Gertner provided the heavy lumber going 2-4 with a HR,
2B, and 5 RBI, and Joel Wax went 2-3 also with a HR and 2B. Legal Papers
Inc's bats were quieter this game, yet every batter reached base safely.
Dave Kopel did go 1-2 with an RBI and Marty Ellis helped his own cause also
going 1-2 with an RBI and BB.
